The name given to this instrument of laboratory was in honor of the german bacteriologist J.R. Petri (1852-1921); he invented that in 1877 when worked as assistant of Robert Koch.
The Petri dish is constituted by two parts: a base and a cover (lid).
Usually, to use itself in microbiology, the plate is partially full with an agar medium where some nutrients are mixed, salts and amino acids, in accordance with the specific necessities of the metabolism of the microrganism to study (therefore, called selective medium). After the agar making solid, a sample contaminated with the microrganism is placed there (some demand, however, that they are placed while the agar if finds hot).
The more recent Petri dishes (as the manufactured ones for the Esteriplás) are manufactured with rings that hold the cover to the base of the superior plate, when piled up, as way to prevent landslides.
Beyond this use (agar plate), it is frequent to use the plate of Petri to observe the germination of the plants and grains of pollen, to observe the behavior of small animals, beyond many other uses.
